Hingston families identified from FreeBMD and GRO 1837-1900 that are not yet associated with Trees

These notes refer to family groups that have been identified from the FreeBMD and GRO indexes which we cannot yet link to Trees. I will delete the notes when the information is incorporated into the trees.

1.  Hingston - Kingdon familyDescendants of ROBERT HINGSTON born Plymouth about 1802.

ROBERT HINGSTON was born in Plymouth about 1802. He joined the Royal Navy on 12 Mar 1819, aged 16; father's name not shown. He married ANN WILLIAMS on 10 Mar 1830 at Stoke Damerel (DFHS index). Ann had been born in about 1803 at Bere Alston. Robert was not with Ann and their two children in 1841 - presumably he was away at sea. In the 1861 census they were living at Navy Row, Plymouth. He was 59, Boatswain, RN, born Plymouth; Ann 58 born Bere Alston; Sarah, daughter, 23, Devonport; Sarah Williams, mother in law, 88, Bere Alston.

Robert and Ann had two children:-

1841: Ann Hingston 30 Frederick, 8 Sarah, 3 (Is this some sort of institution? where is it?). Presumably Robert is away at sea.

FREDERICK HINGSTON born 17 Dec 1831, bapt. 11 Jan 1832 at Beer Ferris, married MARY HONORIA KINGDON at Stoke Damerel Jun 1856. In 1851 he was a pupil at Wolborough (Newton Abbot). In 1861 at Bere Alston, Frederick, 29, Mary H, 28, Frederick W, 4, Robert W, 1

In the 1861 census in Stoke Damerel: Frederick, 29, born Bere Alston; Mary H, 28, Devonport; Frederick, 4 Robert,1.

By 1871 they were living at Portsea Island (Portsmouth)

Frederick and Mary had the following children:-

FREDERICK WESLEY HINGSTON born Stoke Damerel Mar Qtr 1857. In Jun 1878 he married CAROLINE HANSFORD but it seems likely that she died, aged 37, in Portsea in Mar 1887. He then married ALICE FLORENCE CROUCH at Portsea in Sep 1888. In the 1901 Census. 15, Cressy Road, Town, Portsmouth: Frederick Hingston 46, Tailor born Devonport; Florence 36 born Portsmouth; Frederick, son, 20, Tailors Cutter born Portsmouth.

Frederick and Caroline seem to have had one son:-

4.  Hingstons around Salford. Descendants of William born Ireland 1804 and Bridget born Ireland ~1817

M0. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born in Ireland about 1804 and married BRIDGET, probably also in Ireland. They came to Manchester before 1859 since they were recorded in the 1861 Census in St Barnabas Parish in the city: William Hingston aged 57, Cotton Weaver born Ireland; Bridget age 44 born Ireland; Pheba age 16, Cotton Reeler born Ireland; William age 14, Cotton Weaver born Ireland, Alice age 2, born Manchester.

So their children include:-

M1. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born in Ireland sometime around in about 1846, the son of 0. William Hingston and Bridget. He presumably moved to the Manchester area with his parents before 1859. He married MARY CLAY there on the 1st Jun 1868 at the Cathedral and Parish Church in Manchester. He was 22, a Fireman and made his mark; his father was also William and a Cotton Twister. Mary was 19 and also made her mark; her father was Joseph Clay, a Labourer. Both William and Mary were living at 20 Emily Street, Ardwick. William and Mary later lived in Pendleton, which was an industrial area just north of Salford and Manchester. In the 1881 census at 245 Whit Lane, Pendleton, William was aged 36 (so born ~1845) a Cotton Mill Engineer Driver. His wife Mary was 37 born Manchester and their children Joseph 12 (born Manchester), Willie 10, Fanny 7, James 8, John 0 all born Pendleton. Two years later, now at 47 Whit Lane, William (now 59) is described as a Nightwatchman at Mill, with Mary 59, John 21 a Hairdresser, Phoebe 18 a Cotton Weaver, Simon 13, Abraham 9. All children born in Pendleton.

There are more entries to be found at Lancs OPC . Serach for Hingston. Entries added here up to 1910.

So the family of William and Mary probably is:-

M2. JOSEPH HINGSTON was born in Salford Mar 1869, bapt 5 Jan 1870 at St Thomas, Pendleton, the son of 1. William Hingston and Mary (Clay) (Not in GRO under Hingston but there was a Hickson). He married on 6 Jun 1895 SUSAN ASHTON at St John, Radcliffe, Lancs, father Engine Driver. Joseph was a Dyer living at 65 Janes St, Stand Lane.

They had at least two children:-

M3. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born in Salford c. 1871, the son of 1. William Hingston and Mary (Clay) (Not in GRO under Hingston but there were several similar names). He married MARGARET FOULKES at St Luke, Weaste near Manchester on 1 Jan 1890. Both William and Margaret were described as 21, with fathers deceased, but we know that William's father was still alive in 1901. In fact William was probably only 19 at most so this may have been a device to get married without his father's permission because Margaret was pregnant. He was described as a Labourer. Margaret's father was Moses Foulkes, a deceased Labourer. In the 1901 Census he was living at 63 Borough St, Pendleton, aged 29 (so born ~1872), a Locomotive Engine driver born Pendleton, with Margaret 29 and children William 9, Mary J 7, Samuel 3, Frances 0. (all born Pendleton).

Their children include:-

There is one entry in the 1901 census that is in the same part of Salford as the family above but not in the GRO. But this John was apparently born 1870 and there is plenty of evidence that 1. William had a son John born ~1880 who was having children around 1900 so they cannot be from the same family. I can't find his birth, his marriage or his daughter's birth in FreeBMD. But he could though be the son of another son of M0. William.

M4. JOHN HINGSTON seems to have been born in about 1870 in Salford. The only evidence for him so far is in the 1901 Census at 14 Eimeo St Pendleton, where John Hingston age 31 (1870) Foreman Dyer, born Salford; Sarah age 30 born Radcliffe Lancs; Pricilla age 5 born Radcliffe

11.  Hingston - Hogan familyDescendants of Thomas Hingston born Fermoy, Co. Cork in about 1843

F1. THOMAS HINGSTON was born in Fermoy, Co. Cork, Ireland in about 1843. Fermoy is in the north of Co Cork and some way from the known Hingston homes. The only possible link is the Thomas, son of HN49, but we only have very scant information about that family and its source is uncertain. Thomas Hingston married JOHANNA HOGAN at Greenwich Dec 1861. She had been born about 1842 in Deptford. In the 1891 Census they were living at Tanners Hill, Deptford. Thomas Hingston 48 (1843) Bricklayers Scaffolder born Fermoy Co Cork, Johannah 49 Deptford; John Thomas 21 Bricklayers Scaffolder; Michael 18 Earth Crucible Worker; Patrick 16 Carriers Van Boy; Mary 14 Home Domestic; Annie 12; James 7. All children born Deptford. In 1901 and 1911. Thomas is in the Greenwich Union Workhouse.

Children:-

F2. JOHN THOMAS HINGSTON (Kingston in GRO) was born Deptford Mar Qtr, 1870, the son of 1. Thomas Hingston and Johanna Hogan. John married MARY ANN JOYCE at Greenwich Dec Qtr 1891. 1901 living at 18 St Johns Road Deptford; in 1911 Census John Thomas 41 Plumbago Crucible Maker; Mary Ann 40 born Kensington; Albert James 11; Ellen Violet 7; John Thomas 5; Thomas Charles 1. One child deceased

Possible children:-

F3. MICHAEL HENRY (HARRY) HINGSTON was born Deptford (or possibly Fermoy) Jun 1872, the son of 1. Thomas Hingston and Johanna Hogan. He was an Earth Crucible Worker in 1891 and married ANGELINA ELLEN FOLKARD at St Saviour, Southwark Dec 1895. (It is not clear whether he used the name Michael or Harry, and whether he was born in Deptford or Fermoy. It is just possible there were two separate people.)

Children:-

31. Hingston-Roach family. Descendants of William Hingston born c. 1810

WILLIAM HINGSTON was born about 1776 in Devon (65 in 1841). Where?

31 Oct 1811, William Hingston and Mary Ann Skilton were married at Stoke Damerel.

1841 census, William 65 and Mary 60, born Devon

WILLIAM HINGSTON was born in about 1815 (35 in 1851; 45 in 1861; 55 in 1871) in Plymouth so could be the son of William, bapt Plymouth St Andrew 25 Dec 1815. Parents William, cordwainer, and Mary Ann. We know that he married ANN CREABER ROACH at Stoke Damerel on 5 Nov 1835 (DFHS marriage index).  He was described as a Household Servant. Part of the family may be listed in the 1851 census at Cornwall St in Plymouth St Andrew, where Ann Hingston aged 39, Butler's wife is lodging with sons William a 14 year old scholar and Alfred, aged 10.  I can't find any evidence of William the father, or of the youngest child so we don't know how old he was..

32. Hingston-Wilton family. Descendants of John Hingston born Plymouth c. 1802.

JOHN HINGSTON (shown as Kingston in DFHS index) was born about 1802 in Plymouth and married MARY WILTON at Plymouth St Andrew 11 Apr 1824.  He was a Baker. In the 1851 census at 25 Looe St, Plymouth Charles: John, 49 (1802) Journeyman Baker, born Plymouth; Mary 49 Plymouth, Sarah J 21 Milliner, Plymouth; Richard W 17 Apprentice Blacksmith, Plymouth.

Their children were:

38. Hingston-Camp family. Descendants of William Hingston born 1818/1820, possibly Harbertonford

A1. WILLIAM HINGSTON age 43 in 1861 so born about 1818 at Aveton Ford(sic) [Not Aveton Gifford - Harbertonford?]; He married MARY ANN CAMP at Totnes Jun Qtr 1844. William and Mary Ann don't seem to be in the 1851 census in Devon but Philip age 6 and John age 2 are visiting with 19 year old Elizabeth Camp (head of household) at Bow in Ashprington. She is presumably a relative of Mary Ann, possibly sister? In 1861 Census William 43 (1818) Foreman of Porters born Aveton Ford(sic); Mary 36 Ashprington; Philip 16 Boatman Ashprington; John 12 Ashprington; Louisa 5 Stonehouse; William 2 Devonport; Nicholas Kemp Pensioner 45 visitor Plymouth. William died Jun 1871 at East Stonehouse aged 51. 1871, Mary, widow, plus Louisa, William, Henry and Emma.

Possible children:-

A2. PHILIP HENRY HINGSTON born Mar 1845 at Ashprington, the son of 1. William Hingston and Mary Ann (Camp). He married MARY JANE WILLIAMS Plymouth Mar Qtr 1868. In 1871 he was described as a Fisherman.

A3. JOHN HINGSTON born about 1849 near Totnes 1. William Hingston and Mary Ann (Camp). The closest match in 1851 census is John 2 born Ashprington living with 19 year old Elizabeth Camp at Ashprington. He married SALLY ANN HAM at Stoke Damerel Sep 1870 (note after first two births). In 1871 Census: John 22 Fisherman born Totnes; Sally A 23 Plymouth; Sally A 1; Mary J Toms 12 Sister in Law. 1891 Census: John 42 Mariner Totnes; Sally A 43 Plymouth; John P 18 Mariner Plymouth; George 8. 1901 Census. Sally and son George (Labourer at Starch Factory) at 60 Cotehele Av Plymouth.

John's wife Sally Ann was born in 1848, the daughter of William Ham and Sally Hopper. William died in 1852 and Sally (the mother) married James Toms in 1856, who must also have died, because she married George French in 1863. The eldest child named here, 5. Samuel George was born 5 years before Sally Ann Ham married John Hingston, and listed as Samuel George Hopper Ham, so it is possible that John is not the father. Nevertheless, Samuel George seems to have been given Hingston as a surname when his mother married. It may be significant that in 1871 Samuel was living with his maternal grandparents, not with the rest of his new family.

Possible children:-

A5. SAMUEL GEORGE HINGSTON was born Dec 1865 at Plymouth when he was listed as Samuel George Hopper Ham, probably the son of Sally Ann Ham. He seems to have been given the surname Hingston when his mother married 3. John Hingston five years later, but it is possible that John was not his father. He seems, subsequently, to have lived with his maternal grandparents. In 1871 he was aged 5 (so born ~1866), born Plymouth, living with grandparents George and Sally French. In 1881 he was described as age 15 and a Mate (MS) [Merchant Service] living with George French 64, Master (MS). In 1891 he was at sea.

He married THIRZA HEARD at Plymouth Dec 1891. In 1901, they were with daughter, Edith M, 3 (not Elizabeth) and he is listed as a merchant seaman age 33 (so born c.1868).

Possible children:-

A4. JOHN PHILIP WILLIAM HINGSTON born Mar Qtr 1873 at Plymouth, the son of 3. John Hingston and Sally Ann (Ham). He married MARY PATTERSON at Plymouth Jun 1892. 1901 Census Mary Hingston wife 29 Plymouth; John P W 7; Ethel G 5; male baby 0. All born Plymouth. Was John away at sea?

Children:-

42. Hingston-Eastley family.

Edwin Hingston married Sarah Elizabeth Eastley at Kingsbridge Dec 1885.

Possible death of wife Sarah, Kingsbridge, Dec 1890

2 deaths, Edwin John, Kingsbridge, 1889 aged 49 and Edwin Seymour, Lambeth, 1889, aged 42.  Edwin John is most likely. (Possibly John Edwin Hingston born 1845 (Note 31 above but can't find him in the censuses))

Possible child:-

49. Hingston-Hicks family. No marriage found.

Found birth records of Maria and George with mother's name Phoebe

Death of Phoebe Hingston, born 1828, in 1860.

1861 Census: Holwell Road, Clifton John widower 54 (1807) pensioner born Bristol; William 7 Bristol; Maria 5 Bristol. No sign of son George.

Can't find them in other censuses

Possible children:-

55. Hingston families in Isle of Wight/Portsea (Portsmouth) area.

Hingston-Salter family.

WILLIAM HINGSTON was born in Portsea in about 1818. He married ELIZABETH FRANCES SALTER at Portsea Island Sep 1838. I can't find them in the early censuses. In 1871 William 53, an unemployed Carrier, born Portsea; Fanny 52 born Newport (IOW); Fanny Salter, Mother in Law 87 formerly Cook born York. Fanny died Dec Qtr 1872 at IOW. William died Jun 1894 aged 76, IOW

2 births in Portsea, Amelia Hingston born 1815 Portsea and Elizabeth born 1813.  Possible sisters of William (b1818)?

They seem to have had one child:-

Unattached Portsmouth reference

1851 Census Naval Hospital Haslar. William Hingston, Patient, Unmarried 28 (1823), 2nd Captain A:Guard RN, born Modbury Devon

57. Hingston-Paige family

1. WILLIAM HINGSTON (393 in WEH) sojourner, married MARY RANDLE of Ringmore, at Ringmore on 7 Oct 1786.   He would presumably have been born about 1750.  According to WEH he was the son of HENRY HINGSTON of Holbeton (392 in WEH) but he give no dates.

2. WILLIAM HINGSTON (395 in WEH) born (sic) 14 Jun 1787 at Ringmore, son of 1. William and Mary (Randle).  He was a Cooper.  He married JULIA PAIGE at Modbury 2 Mar 1809.  In the 1851 Census at Fore St, Malborough (= Salcombe); William Hingston head 63 Master Mariner, Ringmore ; Julia wife 60 Modbury; James Ryder sonL mar 47 Mariner Ringmore; Charlotte Ryder da 40 Kingsbridge; Sarah E gdau 13 Portlemouth; Charlotte H gdau 9 Scholar Ringmore; Julia gdau 4 Malborough; William P Hingston Gson unm 11 Scholar Liverpool (This must be William's son William Paige).  [The complicating factor here is his description as a Master Mariner in the census but a Cooper at the birth of the children.  But everything else fits]. WEH lists two children Henry (397) and Mary (398) but not the ones mentioned below..

3. WILLIAM HINGSTON bap 29 Aug 1813 at Ermington to 2. William and Julia (Paige) of Melbrooke, ( = Millbrook?) Cornwall, Cooper.  It seems likely that he married MARY ANN FULCHER at Liverpool Sep Qtr 1838.  1841 census at Pownall St Liverpool; Mary Ann Hingston age 25 born Lancashire with William Hingston age 1.
