Hingston Tree HC

Descendants of Hugh Hingston of Aveton Gifford.

This tree represents several generations of Hingston living at Aveton Gifford. The name Hugh seems to run through it. There is an assumed extension via a Customs Officer who later moved to Belfast, from whom there are several descendants. Pam Goodburn (PG) has sent me some information about the first three generations but this information was passed to her by her mother and it is not clear where it comes from. There are clearly entries in the parish registers at Aveton Gifford and Bigbury that almost certainly relate in some way to these entries, but which are not yet tied in.

The tree has been significantly updated and extended by including the results of WEH's study. As a result the families 9. to 14. have been added. 14/4/2013.

Entries from Bigbury that may be relevant

15 Jan 1687 (OS). William Hingstone and Grace Barry of ...... married at Bigbury. (the name after it looks a bit like Aveton Gifford but it is very indistinct).
13 Oct 1691. Thomas Hingston of Modbury and Elizabeth Saunders were married at Bigbury.
6 Sep 1696. Thomas Hingston and Sarah Sture, both of this parish were married at Bigbury. (There is some very faint writing after the entry that may relate to Aveton Gifford).

2 Apr 1743. George son of George and Mary Hingston baptized at Bigbury.

Generation No. 1

6. HUGH HINGSTON (1575 in WEH) (presumably born about 1610) died 26 May 1665, married WILMOT, who died 1653. (All info from PG). These burial dates match entries in Diptford.

Child of Hugh Hingston and Wilmot is (PG):

Generation No. 2

7. HUGH HINGSTON (1576 in WEH) (presumably born about 1640), the son of 6. Hugh Hingston and Wilmot, appears to have been married twice. ANN, wife of Hugh, was buried at Aveton Gifford 2 Feb 1696, and married ANN KENT 30 Nov 1697 at Aveton Gifford. (Must check this is not confusion between OS and NS dates)

Child of Hugh Hingston and Ann is (PG):

Generation No. 3

8. HUGH HINGSTON (1577 in WEH) (presumably born about 1670), the son of 7. Hugh Hingston and Ann, married JOAN STRAW (CJB) (or SHAW (PG)) on 4 Oct 1702 at Aveton Gifford. She was buried 3 Mar 1717 (described as widow) at Aveton Gifford. Hugh was buried 3 Dec 1711 at Aveton Gifford.

(WEH says that it was 8. Hugh who married twice; to Ann Kent of Kingsbridge 30 Nov 1697 and after her death to Joan Shaw of Aveton Gifford on 4 Oct 1702. He does not give any dates of death. With what we know at present I think it can be read either way.)

The following entries are in the registers for Bigbury which appear to be relevant. It may indicate that Hugh was married twice, or these entries could be totally unrelated.
15 Jan 1691 (OS). John son of Hugh and April (sic) Hingston baptized at Bigbury.

1. HUGH HINGSTON (1579 in WEH) (presumably born about 1700), the son of 8. Hugh Hingston and Joan (Straw), was buried 25 Oct 1750 in Aveton Gifford. He married SUSANNAH COLE at Bigbury 11 Jun 1723 (WEH says she was from Ugborough). She was described as being of *ugborough (where * represents a character I cannot read on the microfilm). She was buried at Aveton Gifford 13 Oct 1747.

Children of Hugh Hingston and Susannah are:

Generation No. 5

2. HUGH HINGSTON (1580 in WEH) was baptised 26 Jun 1724 in Aveton Gifford, the son of 1. Hugh Hingston and Susannah, and died 31 Oct 1784 in Aveton Gifford. He married MARY CLEMENTS 28 Sep 1753 (but not sure where - not AG). In 1764 he paid rates at Aveton Gifford for properties identified as "Edwards Burrough and Mumfords". Buried Aveton Gifford 31 Oct 1784.

Children of Hugh Hingston and Mary are:

10. RICHARD HINGSTON. (1582 in WEH) the son of 1. Hugh Hingston and Susannah, born 1 Nov 1727, baptised 17 Nov 1727 at Aveton Gifford. WEH doesn't say who he married but shows one daughter..

The only recorded child of Richard Hingston is:

Generation No. 6

9. NATHANIEL HINGSTON (1586 in WEH) born 10 Apr 1754 and baptised 19 Apr 1754 at Aveton Gifford the son of 2. Hugh Hingston and Mary. WEH said he married ELIZABETH AVERY of Aveton Gifford but the marriage did not take place at AG and isn't shown in the DFHS marriage index.

The children of Nathaniel Hingston and Elizabeth are:

3. HUGH HINGSTON (1591 in WEH) was born 13 Aug 1762 and baptised 10 Sep 1762 at Aveton Gifford, the son of 2. Hugh Hingston and Mary; he married MARY HURRELL AVERY of Loddiswell 19 Apr 1799, Thurlestone. He is described as "of Buckland, Labourer". WEH says he died in 1830.

The children of Hugh and Mary were:-

Generation No. 7

12. RICHARD HINGSTON (1596 in WEH) born 1 May 1813 the son of 9. Nathaniel Hingston and Elizabeth (Avery) and married 12 Oct 1838 to MARY PERRING of Modbury and died 7 Sep 1896.

The children of Richard Hingston and Mary are:

11. NATHANIEL HINGSTON (1595 in WEH) born 15 June 1814 the son of 9. Nathaniel Hingston and Elizabeth (Avery) at Aveton Gifford and married 1 May 1836 to MARY EVANS BICKFORD of Malborough and died 5 Oct 1886. Nathaniel was a mariner.

The children of Nathaniel and Mary are:

4. NATHANIEL HINGSTON (1597 in WEH) was baptised 9 May 1807 at Thurlestone, the son of 3. Hugh Hingston and Mary (Avery). He married JANE CROKER 29 Jan 1833 at St Petrox, Dartmouth; she was described as being of the parish of Stoke Fleming - he was described as a sojourner so did not come from the parish; she was buried 20 Jun 1882 (in Belfast?), age 74. Nathaniel was a preventive coastguard officer, which presumably involved moving around various postings on the south coast, before becoming a Customs House Officer at Belfast. Nathaniel joined the coastguard on 6 Sept 1835, serving on the ship ‘Hawke’ (source PRO ADM 6 199). In the 1841 census Nathaniel was a boatman for the coastguard, living on St Agnes island in the Isles of Scilly; his place of birth is given as ‘not in Cornwall’. He was described to WEH as "A very tall and fine looking man with flaxen hair, and with a strong family likeness."

Most of the subsequent information regarding this family come from Richard Hingston who can be contacted via his brother Rowland <rowland.hingston@AES.com>, but some is from Sarah Cotter <scc27@tutor.open.ac.uk>.

The children of Nathaniel and Jane are:-

Generation No. 8

13. NATHANIEL HINGSTON (1639 in WEH) Of Malborough, born Aveton Gifford 2 Jan 1839 the son of 12. Richard Hingston and Mary (Perring), baptised 11 Feb 1839 and married 17 Dec 1865 to MARY GRACE MOORE CLARK of the same parish. WEH obviously met him because he described him "as a mariner and Capt of his own boat and has been for many years. Is alive and well and lives in his own house near the church in Malborough. He is known among his friends as "Cloudy" because of an expression he used often to make use of which was very appropriate while he was navigating the English Channel. He is still hail and well at the age of 67. His wife died in 1880. (This seems doubtful because she was alive in the 1881 census. But I can't find a suitable death for a Mary). His only son died 3 Feb last year and his youngest daughter Mary 1696 got married the year before so he is now practically alone. (Feb 1906)"

15. RICHARD STEER HINGSTON was born 11 Jul 1847 (Kingsbridge District) the son of 12. Richard Hingston and Mary (Perring). He was a Carpenter. He seems to have married who MARY SHEPHERD in London (Lambeth) in Mar 1877; they had one child but Mary died Jun 1880 in Lambeth.

Child of Richard Hingston and Mary Shepherd:-

Richard married, secondly, in 1887 JANE PIGNEY at Epsom. She already had a child Ellen Jane Pigney, born 1876, who did not adopt the name Hingston (she married (as Pigney) in 1900 in Wandsworth). They do not appear to have had children of their own but in 1891 at York Road, Lambeth, Richard's children with Mary were living with them, as was Ellen Pigney age 15 and William Hingston, a boarder, age 24 and a Carpenter. He is almost certainly Richard's nephew, son of Nathaniel.

There is a conflict with WEH where Richard is 1639, where he was described as a Capt of his own boat, born 11 July 1847 and died 22 May 1894. D.S.P. (It looks as though WEH was conflating the information about Richard and his brother Nathaniel.

14. GEORGE HENRY HINGSTON (1677 in WEH) of Kingsbridge the son of 4. Nathaniel Hingston and Jane (Croker) born 3 Jan 1837 was married to Miss COLLINS of New Castle in Belfast in 1867 (Irish marriages ref 1867 6 347) and died 25 Nov 1893.

5. WILLIAM HINGSTON (1598 in WEH) was baptised 25 Oct 1840, St Agnes, Isles of Scilly, the son of 4. Nathaniel Hingston and Jane (Croker). He married AGNES MARGARET GILLES 3 Apr 1871, the daughter of James Gilles and Sarah (Kerr) of Liverpool, born 19 Feb 1843. She died 14 Jun 1925 in Belfast. William died 2 Nov 1922 and is buried in Belfast City Cemetry, Falls Road, Belfast, where there is a memorial to the whole family. William was a joiner - he was apprenticed to Robert Hickson and Company in 1854. The yard was acquired by E J Harland in 1858. William became the head of the Joiners, Cabinet-Makers and Woodworking machine men (some 2000 to 3000 men) in the Harland and Wolff Shipyard. He retired in 1908 after 54 years service.

The children of William Hingston and Agnes are:-

There was also a JANE CROKER HINGSTON born Belfast 1871 (ref 11 239) who was presumably related here in some way.
