The Kentucky Connection

This page is taken, with permission, from a set of web pages maintained by Bob Francis (www.shawhan.com) that no longer exist, which were dedicated to a history of Bourbon County, Kentucky, and which included the descendants of John Hinkson. There was an associated newsgroup (hinkson@roostweb.com) but that now seems to be fairly quiet. It was known that 1. John Hinkson below came from somewhere in the north of Ireland, but with no details.

Recent (late 2016) research by Joe and Judy Smaldone into the Hinksons in Co. Cavan, part of the historic province of Ulster in the north of Ireland, shws that some Hinksons (as they called themselves) settled in the area as part of the "Plantation of Ulster" early in the 17th century. The Smaldones' own document is now available on this site and a listing of the early Hinksons in Ulster is also available. The early records are not complete but there is compelling evidence that 1. John Hinkson here is the son of 24. John Hinkson in the Ulster page. There is also a link to another set of Hinksons who emigrated to Pennsylvania, confusingly led by another John, from whom Judy Smaldone is descended.

It is now clear that there is nmo connection (at least within Ireland) to the Hingstons in the area near Cork in Ireland that were descended from a Major James Hingston who had been a member of Cromwell's New Model Army.

There is a summary of the Hingstons in Ireland.
