The map of marriages in the period 1754-1837 from the DFHS index shows a cluster of Hingston marriages in the area north of Totnes, centred around the villages of Staverton and Broadhempston, but also including Ashburton, Buckfastleigh, Rattery and Littlehempston, as well as Totnes. Unusually for Devon, many of these parish records are entered into the IGI. This tree has been prepared from the avaiable records, with added information from Jill Hartnell. Tree HS itself seems to be a consistent tree that lies mainly within Staverton, but not all the Staverton entries are included. Entries not linked in are shown below the tree, alongside entries in other nearby parishes. These would repay a more careful study. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who can add to Tree HS or provide links to the many unattached Hingstons.

Christian name not given but assume for the moment that it is Henry since a Henry starts to have children straight after this marriage and there are no other families having children at the time. This needs to be checked however.

14. THOMAS HINGSTON was probably baptised at Staverton, 6 Jan 1765 (IGI), the son of 11. John Hingston and Joan Tapril. According to the Settlement Report by the Overseers of the Poor for Cockington (A2A Devon Records), in a deposition made by Thomas Mudge of Cockington, yeoman Re Thomas Hinkson legal settlement. (re 3349A/(16). He (Thomas Hingston) was born in Staverton. When age 10 yrs he was taken by his uncle Thomas Taprell, a partner with the deponent in Newfoundland trade. Served them until aged 18 years for meat, drink and clothes. He was not apprenticed and would not serve them unless he was paid wages. Deponent shipped him to Newfoundland service in the Brig Isabell of Dartmouth, belonging to Arthur French. Deponent, who was the master went to sea in same Brig for two years, when deponent left the service. During 8 years, Hinkson served this uncle and Mudge in Newfoundland trade. Vessel occasionally laid up in Dartmouth harbour in winter season, while Hinkson lived with his uncle in Chilston, Cockington as part of the family. Thomas married MARY MANLEY at Torre Church, Torquay 3 Feb 1789. He was a Master Mariner who sailed between Dartmouth and Newfoundland. When he died his wife made a petition to Trinity House, presumably for financial support, on 13 Sep 1821. She was then aged 58, had sons Thos 25, William 23 and John 19 but they were not dependent on her. Her occupation was given as sempstress. As a result of Mudge's deposition the Magistrates confirmed they would not remove Mary Hinkson, his widow without further proof of her husband's settlement in Cockington.

22. WILLIAM FRANCIS HINGSTON was born 27 May 1853 in Staverton, the son of 20. John Hingston and Mary Memory. He died 1940 in Plymouth. He married HANNAH (or Anna) WEEKS 12 Nov 1873 at Ermington. The family memory is that her maiden name was Lavers, but that applied to her mother. Hannah's parents were John Weeks of Penquit, 23, Labourer and Mary Ann Lavers, also of Penquit, who married 20 Jun 1847 at Modbury Parish Church. There was an Anna Weeks born in 1855 in Newton Abbot district. The family lived at Budlake, Ermington.

GEORGE EDWIN HINGSTON, born 19 Oct 1879; bapt 14 Dec 1879 at Ermington; died 1880; buried 18 Feb 1880 at Ermington.
EDWIN HINGSTON, born 1881 at Ermington; bapt 15 May 1881 at Ermington died there in 1935. He married FANNY DAISY RIDER 1919 in Ermington. She was born 1894 in Ermington and died 1972 in Plymouth. They had 4 children.
GEORGE ALBERT HINGSTON, born 1883 at Ermington,bapt 12 Oct 1883 at Ermington; died Ashford, Kent in 1972. He married MAUD MARY SYDENHAM 1910 in the Isle of Wight. She was born 1882 in Dulverton and died 1957 in Weymouth. They had two children.

LUCY JANE HINGSTON, born 1888 at Ermington. She married CHARLES MAURICE PERRY in 1912 at Ermington. They lived at Bampton in north Devon and had two children. Lucy died in 1959 and Charles in 1949.
ANNIE HINGSTON was born 16 Feb 1890 at Ermington. She married ROBERT HENRY LEVY on 21 Apr 1919 in Brushford, Somerset. They had one daughter. Annie died 1978 on the Isle of Wight and Robert died in 1970 at Wokingham. They are the grandparents of Jill Hartnell <jmah@hotmail.co.uk>.

In the 1861 Census at Tickelmore St Totnes: Hubert Hingston 28 (1833) Labourer in Wine Store, Staverton; Harriett 29 Staverton; John A 2. Hubert must have died because n the 1871 Census at Castle St, Totnes, Harriet Hingston Head 35 Widow, Charwoman born Staverton; John A 12 Grocers Errand Boy born Totnes; Hubert 9 Totnes; Walter R 7 Totnes. In his son Hubert's marriage register entry in 1884 he is listed as a Gardener, but by this time it is presumed he had died.

35. JOHN HINGSTON was born in Buckfastleigh 1836; he was probably the son of 26. Thomas Hngston and Elizabeth (Bow). His birth record has not been found but in 1841 he was living in Devon with Mary Newland and Anthony Newland, mason and slater, both aged 35, so born c 1806. Mary Newland had been born Mary Bow at Staverton so he was John's mother's sister. In 1851 he was living in London with his widowed aunt, Marian Newland. He was described as a Carpenter, as he was when he married SARAH ANN LEE PENNY at Kensington in Jun Qtr 1854. In 1841

33. HUBERT HINGSTON was born Sep Qtr 1861 at Totnes (FreeBMD), the son of 28. Hubert Hingston and Harriet (Allery). He married MARY ELIZABETH THORNE, 26, the daughter of John Thorne, Mason, at Dunster, Somerset 6 Dec 1884. He was described as a Baker, age 23, living at Lacock, Wilts. (In the GenUKI transcription both Hubert and his father have been shown as Herbert). In the 1891 Census: Richmond Arms, Richmond Place, Bath: Hubert 29 (1862) Baker born Totnes; Mary E 30 Innkeeper, born Minehead; Maud T 4 Lacock, Wilts; Hubert J 2 Bath; Laura E 1 Bath. He is probably the Hubert Hingston who died at Bath in Dec 1841 aged 81.
