Hingstons in Newfoundland

It would appear that there were two sets of Hingstons in St John's Newfoundland, one in the 1790s and another from about 1840. However, they seem to have had a preponderance of daughters and the Hingston name has died out.

Joan Wendling and Jean Hardy have put information on the Southside Hills St. John's website. The following tree is taken from that site. One of the pages on that site says William Hingston is the same William Thomas Hingston (Tree HD#47) born in Newton Ferrers in 1822, but he is well attested by records and letters to have emigrated to Tasmania, so we must look for another William to take the line back further.

There is another web page about Newfoundland Grand Banks genealogy but at the time of writing it appeared not to have any information that is not already here.

Descendants of William Hingston

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born 1816 in Newton Ferrers, Devon, England, and died January 28, 1887 in St. John's, Newfoundland. He married (1) JANE HARRIS May 15, 1842 in St. John's Cathedral, St. John's, NF, daughter of GEORGE HARRIS and ELIZABETH. She was born 1819 in St. John's, NF, and died July 07, 1860 in St. John's, Newfoundland. He married (2) MARY JANE HARRIS, a widow (nee WEBBER) August 05, 1860 in St. Thomas Anglican Church , St. John's, NF. She was born Abt. 1834, and died in St. John's, Newfoundland. Witness to the marriage of William Hingston and Jane Harris were John Gregory and Ann Gregory. Witnesses to the marriage of William to Mary Jane were John Blackler, Ann Webber and George Webber. It seems that Mary Jane Webber married James Harris, brother of William's first wife Jane Harris. James was drowned and William married his sister-in-law a month after he too was widowed.

Abraham Hingston

There was another Hingston in St. John's in the early days. ABRAHAM HINGSTON was well set up in St John's by the last decade of the 18th century. He was from St Nicholas (Shaldon, near Teignmouth in Devon), where he seems to have been baptized on 25 Aug 1773, the son of Abraham and Mary Hingston. Newfoundland census records always kept track of religion. In Abram Hingstone's case there were two protestants in his family and four Catholics. The Catholics might be servants. Abraham's daughter Mary married Thomas Bennett in 1796; she was the grandmother of Charles Fox Bennett who became one of the prime ministers of Newfoundland. That marriage seems to have taken place in Shaldon (see the Teignmouth page.)

There is probably more work needed to flesh out this tree.
