Descendants of Joseph Hingston, born about 1682.


This tree has largely been researched by Alf Hingston. I will pass on to him any comments.

Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH HINGSTON was born Abt 1682, and died Aug 1743 in Thurlestone. He married ELIZABETH WORDEN 23 Apr 1710 in Thurlestone.

According to Alf Hingston there are two possible candidates to be this Joseph Hingston;

A. Joseph baptised Newton Ferrers 7/9/1682, son of Christopher baptised Newton Ferrers 13/10/1633, son of Bartholomew baptised Newton Ferrers 26/8/1610, son of George born about 1580 (tree HF-A).

B. Joseph baptised Modbury 28/2/1681/2, son of Joseph baptised Modbury 12/12/1647, son of Joseph born about 1620 (tree HF-B)

2. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born Jan 1711/12 in Thurlestone, the son of 1. Joseph Hingston and Elizabeth (Worden), and died Feb 1803 in Thurlestone. He married ELIZABETH JARVIS 5 Feb 1733/34 in Thurlestone.

3. ABRAHAM HINGSTON was born Jan 1712/13 in Thurlestone, the son of 1. Joseph Hingston and Elizabeth (Worden), and died Mar 1795. He married GRACE HARDY 2 Feb 1736/37 in Thurlestone.

4. JOSEPH HINGSTON was born Feb 1721/22 in Thurlestone, the son of 1. Joseph Hingston and Elizabeth (Worden), and died in Thurlestone. He married MARY TABB 29 Dec 1748.

Alf Hingston gives two alternatives for burial of Joseph, either 7/12/1778 or 29/5/1795 (where?)

5. GEORGE HINGSTON was born May 1737 in Thurlestone, the son of 2. William Hingston and Elizabeth (Jarvis), and died Sep 1825 in Thurlestone. He married MARY COLLINS Mar 1760.

Two of George and Mary's children are candidates to be the William and John Hingston, believed to be brothers, who were Masters of ships transporting convicts to Australia.

6. ABRAHAM HINGSTON was born Jan 1743/44 in Thurlestone, the son of 2. William Hingston and Elizabeth (Jarvis), and died Mar 1795 in Thurlestone. He married ELIZABETH MARTIN 23 Apr 1772.

8. ABRAHAM HINGSTON was born Jan 1769 in Thurlestone, the son of 4. Joseph Hingston and Mary (Tabb), and died 12 Sep 1843 in Buckland, Thurlestone. He married SARAH OSBOURNE 6 Feb 1808 in Thurlestone (DFHS Index has 1807). In the 1851 census Sarah, now widowed, is keeping house for her widowed son-in-law, John Herd.

9. JOHN HINGSTON was born Mar 1782 in Bantham, Thurlestone, the son of 6. Abraham Hingston and Elizabeth (Martin), and died 6 Sep 1875 in Aveton Gifford. He married SARAH SMITH 28 Mar 1806 in Maker. In the 1851 census the family were at Newton Ferrers.

10. WILLIAM HINGSTON was born Feb 1810 in Thurlestone, the son of 8. Abraham Hingston and Sarah (Osbourne). He married ELIZABETH PRITOR 3 Mar 1841 in Portlemouth. He had died by the 1851 census since Elizabeth is shown as widowed.

Child of William Hingston and Elizabeth Pritor is:

11. JOHN HINGSTON was born 19 May 1815, the son of 8. Abraham Hingston and Sarah (Osbourne) and baptised 4 Jun 1815 at the Ebenezer Chapel, Kingsbridge. He married SARAH JEFFERY 15 Sep 1836 in Thurlestone. In the 1851 census at Thurlestone.

12. ABRAHAM HINGSTON was born 29 Jun 1815 in Newton Ferrers, the son of 9. John Hingston and Sarah (Smith), and died 26 Jan 1880 in Devonport. He married ELIZABETH MARTIN 26 Jul 1852 in Stoke Damerel. In the 1871 Census they were living at 1 Keppel Cottages in Devonport (which is part of Stoke Damerel Parish). At the same address there was also a pawnbroker’s shop. In 1881 and 1891 Elisabeth was living at the same address as a widow. She was described in a city directory as a Milliner.

Children of Abraham Hingston and Elizabeth Martin are:

16. WILLIAM HINGSTON, b. Oct 1841, Waterhead, East Portlemouth, the son of 10. William Hingston and Elizabeth Pritor. He seems to have married ELIZABETH WILLIAMS, since the eldest children are listed in the GRO with Williams as the mother's maiden name, but no suitable marriage has been found. He was a bricklayer and they seem to have lived in various places, presumably moving for work, and on 8 Jun 1870 they were living at 6 Golborne Gardens, Upper Westbourne Park in London. In May 1870 they had emigrated in the Medway to Quebec and settled at Parkdale near Toronto in Canada where two more (at least) children were born. They may have moved again becuase in the 1930 census in the US at Pleasantville, Atlantic Co., New Jersey, Eva is living with Arthur and his family and the census shows they became US citizens in 1882. Elizabeth died 1 Mar 1921 in Pleasantville, NJ.

13. ANDREW CORNISH HINGSTON was born Feb 1846 in Aunemouth, Thurlestone, the son of 11. John Hingston and Sarah Jeffery, and died 1899 in Plymouth. He married SUSAN PADDON 24 Nov 1872 in Plymouth Register Office.

14. FRANK THOMAS MARTIN HINGSTON was born 17 Mar 1862 in Devonport, the son of 12. Abraham Hingston and Elizabeth (Martin), and died 9 Dec 1918. He married MARTHA ELIZABETH RODGERS 5 Feb 1888 in Wycliffe Congregational Chapel, Devonport.

Children of Frank Hingston and Martha Rodgers are:

15. JOHN PADDON HINGSTON was born 1873 in Liskeard, Cornwall, the son of 13. Andrew Hingston and Sarah (Paddon). He married MARY LILLIAN TEAGUE 11 Apr 1899 in St Stephen's, St Austell, Cornwall.
