Hingston Tree HI
Descendants of John Hingston, married 1739 in Dartmouth
This tree has been produced by me almost entirely from the IGI lists and the census information, in an attempt to draw together some of the Hingston families in the Dartmouth area where the name Langworthy is a common thread. It must thus ALL be regarded as highly suspect until the original sources have been checked. It may though form the basis of future research.

Generation No. 1
1. JOHN HINGSTONE. He married ELEANOR LANGWORTHY 31 Jan 1739/40 in St Saviour, Dartmouth.
There was another family, John Hingston and Elizabeth Trust (married 17/7/1733) in Dartmouth, possibly having children at the same time. Only those children that can definitely be linked to John and Eleanor are noted here. It is possible that the two Johns are the same, and that Elizabeth died, in which case this list will need to be reviewed.
Children of John Hingstone and Eleanor Langworthy are:
Generation No. 2

- 5. GEORGE HINGSTON.
- ELEANOR HINGSTON, b. Dec 1795, Dartmouth; m. THOMAS PRATT, 15 Nov 1819, St Saviour, Dartmouth. It is believed Thomas' father was also called Thomas and kept The Old London Inn in St Sidwell St, Exeter and that Thomas went into the theatrical business, changing his name to Mowbray. Thomas and Elizabeth had three children, Elizabeth b 1820, Thomas b 1822 and Richard Langworthy Hingston Pratt b 1824. This younger Thomas called himself Thomas Mowbray and was proprietor of the Soho Theatre in Dean St, London. In 1861 his mother, Hellen Moubray (sic), aged 63, born Devon, is living with him. It is believed that this was Eleanor Hingston. The Soho area was a little more respectable than today to begin with but probably slipped downhill as more theatres and music halls competed with each other. Our Mr Mowbray appeared to do a mixture of plays and musical shows. He was listed as a comedian in 1861. He also opened the Royal Aquarium in London. This was aimed at entertaining Members of Parliament after their late night sessions. The idea was to house an Aquarium for families (harkening back to his Devon roots maybe) and to have a theatre at the back for evening entertainment. However, the tanks were never filled with fish and so the venture failed, although the theatre lived on. He was also lessee of the New Royalty Theatre. The catalogue at the British Library shows a playbill for the Soho Theatre in 1854 with Mr Mowbray as lessee. It is possible that Helen/Eleanor Hingston, his mother, also went on stage. Pam Dean <harridene@ntlworld.com> is interested in this family and would like to make contact with others who are following this line.

4. RICHARD LANGWORTHY HINGSTON was born Nov 1787 in Dartmouth, the son of 3. Richard Langworthy Hingston and Elizabeth (Beenlen). He married ANN COLTON 31 Jan 1814 in St Clement, Dartmouth. In 1851 Richard L Hingston, 63, Merchant, and Ship Agent, b Dartmouth, was living at Moss Street, St. Saviours, Dartmouth with Ann, his wife, 64;

He married MARY BULLEY daughter of Richard Bulley of Townstall and his wife Mary (Soper), on 1 Jan 1820 in St Clement, Dartmouth. Her brother John Bulley became Mayor of Dartmouth 1839/40. (Jonathan Turner has an Ancestry site about this family). At the birth of their first child George was described as a Ropemaker, but he was later described as a Merchant and by 1873, when his son Frederick married, he was a Gentleman. Mary died soon after the birth of her son Frederick and was buried at Dartmouth Townstall on 3 Apr 1838, aged 41. Frederick seems to have been cared for by their niece, Ann Colton Hingston. We have not yet tracked down what happened to the rest of the family. George died aged 82 at Plymouth in 1876.

6. RICHARD LANGWORTHY HINGSTON was born Apr 1816 in Dartmouth, the son of 4. Richard Langworthy Hingston and Ann (Colton). He married JANE HOLDITCH, born 16 Jun 1814 in Cornworthy, daughter of John Holditch (1769-1836) and Elizabeth (nee Giddey) (1773-1858), of Court Prior, Cornworthy. In the 1851 census the family are shown as living at King St, Brixham. Richard is described as a Lloyd's Agent, born at Dartmouth. By 1881 Jane has been widowed and staying with her brother-in-law, John Puddicombe, a surgeon, in Dartmouth; he was the husband of Richard's sister Helen Susan.
Most of the information for this family comes from Rosemary Neale <RosemaryNeale@breathemail.net> who is researching the Holditch line.
Children of Richard Hingston and Jane Holditch are:
- RICHARD LANGWORTHY HINGSTON, bapt. 16 Nov 1843, Brixham All Saints. In 1881 was an accountant, living at Cary Crescent, Torquay, next door to his sisters.
- REGINALD JOHN HINGSTON, bapt. 7 Jul 1845, Brixham All Saints. (There is a marriage of a Reginald John Hingston in Bromsgrove in Sep 1884, but it is a long way away and he would have been 39 by then)
- JESSIE JANE HINGSTON, bapt. 31 Jan 1849, Brixham All Saints. Became a Governess and lived at Cary Crescent, Torquay (1881). She is described as the head of household. The Cary Crescent property had been purchased by her aunt, Elizabeth Holditch on the death of her parents, and was left to the Hingston daughters on Elizabeth's death in 1874.
- ISABELLA ELIZABETH HINGSTON, bapt 22 Jul 1851, Brixham All Saints.

Their children were:-

7. FREDERICK HINGSTON was born 8 Mar 1838, the son of 5. George Hingston and Mary Bullen. His mother died at or soon after his birth. In the 1841 census he is shown as living in Bolton Terrace, Brixham, in the home of his cousin, 6. Richard Langworthy Hingston. Richard's sister, Ann Colton Hingston is also living there and is presumably caring for young Frederick. In 1851 he was a pupil at a school in Wolborough (Newton Abbot), while by 1861 he was shown as a clerk at Bank of England and lodging at South Town, Dartmouth with Ellen Ashford; he was listed as her cousin. In 1871 Frederick Hingston, 33, a Bank Inspector, born Dartmouth, visitor, at the home of James Mayston, draper, at 1 Lower Market, Tavistock.
On 14 Aug 1873, aged 35, bachelor, Bank Manager, he married MARY ELLEN ROME age 22, spinster, daughter of Joseph Rome, Gentleman, at Enderby In Leicestershire. See transcription of the church records on Enderby web site. Both Frederick and Mary are described as being "of Enderby" but neither Hingston nor Rome appear in the 1871 and 1881 censuses there. Frederick's father, George, was described as a "Gentleman". He probably died aged 51 at Northampton in 1889.
Frederick and Mary seem to have had three children:-
- MARY HINGSTON bap 18 Jun 1875 at Enderby
- CICELY HINGSTON bap 26 Dec 1875 at Enderby, buried there 29 Apr 1876 age 5 months (Note the short gap between baptisms of Mary and Cicely)
- FREDERICK LEONARD HINGSTON was born at Leicester on the 6 Jun 1877 but is not in the baptismal transcription at Enderby. He is the Frederick Leonard Hingston killed in 1915 - see obituary, and is (90 in WEH). He was educated at Llandaff Cathedral School and Malvern College and joined the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry from the Militia in October, 1899, and took part in the South African War, in which he was employed with the Mounted Infantry, and was present at operations in the Orange Free State from February to May, 1900, including actions at Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Vet, and Zand River; in the Transvaal in May and June, again, from July to November, 1900; and a third time from November, 1900, to October, 1901, including actions near Johannesburg, at Pretoria, Diamond Hill, and Belfast. He was mentioned in Despatches ("London Gazette," 10th September, 1901); and received the Queen's medal with six clasps. He was promoted Lieutenant in May, 1901, and Captain in February 1909; and in December, 1911, was appointed Adjutant of the 3rd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. He held this appointment until March, 1915, when he rejoined the 1st Battalion, which formed part of the Vth Division. He was well-known in Switzerland as a remarkably fine skier. In the winter of 1913-14 he won the British Ski-ing Association Cup at Wengen. He was also adept at ice-hockey, winning many trophies, and a keen lawn tennis player and golfer. He married, in November 1911, ESSY PLANT, youngest daughter of the late Colonel William Charles Plant, Indian Army, and left no family. He was killed in action near Ypres on 26 Apr 1915, and buried in the Military Cemetery at Poperinghe, was the only son of the late Frederick Hingston, of St. Oswalds, Selwyn Road, Eastbourne.
